ASHWIN'S BIOGRAPHY

Ashwin is a 17 year old drummer. He grew up in New Jersey, and had the opportunity to attend programs such as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's Jazz for Teens and Manhattan School of Music's Precollege Jazz Division. He has represented Holmdel High School in the New Jersey All-State Jazz Ensemble for three years and has been a part of various local jazz groups.

In 2013, He was selected to be a part of the Jazz Band of America, where he worked closely with drummer Ndugu Chancler. In summer of 2013, he studied with Matt Wilson and many others at the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony and with Lewis Nash at the highly selective Vail Jazz Workshop. Now, in 2014, he holds a drum spot in Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. He will be touring Japan and California this summer as well as performing on the Jimmy Lyons stage at the Monterey Jazz Festival with musician Eric Harland.

Musicians such as Paul Motian, Billy Hart, John Coltrane, Mark Turner, Joe Henderson, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Ben van Gelder, Craig Weinrib, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJohnette, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, and more have had a huge influence on Ashwin's unique style of playing.

SUMMER 2013

I've returned from the Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony. Stefon Harris, Matthew Wilson, Eddie Gomez, Clark Sommers...and many more were my teachers for that week. They each had an incredible aura and overflowed with knowledge. For any other young jazz artists, please apply for the camp, you will never forget it if you are selected.

The next workshop that I had the pleasure of attending in summer 2013 was the Vail Jazz Workshop. Lewis Nash will taught me, along with John and Jeff Clayton, Wycliffe Gordon, Bill Cunliffe, and Terell Stafford. It was an incredible opportunity, and I grew so much as a musician.

Summer 2013 was life-changing. Thank you!
